Hi, just a shot in the dark . . .
Have you checked the AGP mode in the BIOS ? Since it is working on the old 4x GeForce, it could be that your AGP Mode may be incorrect, or even the AGP Aperture size.
Try setting the aperture to 128 bit, shut down, install the 3850, boot up . . .

it seems to be your motherboard.when did this start to happen?,i mean neither Linux nor Windows installs.get a BIOS update or return the mobo if it is still in warranty.
