Dual boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint

Post by x3n0n »

Hey everybody!

I would like to dual boot LinuxMint and Windows 7 (I need Windows to play games, Wine is not powerfull enough)
So I tried this 3 times. All the 3 times i tried to install linux (Windows was on my computer first) I failed.

Here is what i did:

I created a partition for Linux Mint (about 200Gb)
After that I booted from the liveCD and I tried to install LinuxMint on the created partition,
but it could not find the partition. It just gave me the complete disk.
So I tried to install it on the complete disk (thinking, it's more easy to install windows after you installed linux).
This installation was succesfull.

So when I restart my system, it says:

Code: Select all

GRUB Loading...
Error 2
btw, I have 2 hdd's ACHI configured.
when I install Linux Mint on the 2 hdd's together, the same problem appears...

What am I doing wrong?
Btw, when I am installing Linux, my Windows 7 operating system cannot be found... There is only a /device/... that is in use and is NTFS type.
My version of Windows 7 is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Generally there some issues with grub2 and installing differnt OSs on differnt HDDs. Usually a setup where both OSs reside on partitions of the first HDD are less problematic.

I have installed Win7 (x64, too) first and after that Mint on a partition using the custom partitioning. This approach usually is safe.

Generally it's best to install Windows first, but don't go reinstalling just yet!

Let's see exactly what you have going on now by running the Boot Info Script as described here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1291280

Once I see the output from that I should be able to at least make some recommendations.

Edit: I just realized that I didn't say you'll need to do this from the Live Desktop, that is just boot the Linux Mint Live CD and work from that Live environment.

This is the output of the Boot_info_script:
(Note that I don't have Linux Mint installed right now, bcuz it wouldn't boot anyway and it messed up my Windows boot loader)

Code: Select all
