I just installed a new hard drive in my Dell Precision M60 and trying to install Linux Mint 8. The computer runs fine from CD but will not run from booting from the install on hard drive. I get the message error: no such device: 92749b68-4865-4d0e-8302-211757ae2ae4 Press any key to continue at the screen GNU Grub Version 1.97~beta4. There is four options one being Linux Mint 8 Helena, linux 2.6.31-14-generic and so on. I get the same responce on all of the four options.

Myself and others have had trouble installing Mint 8 on a SATA drive
Well I have found a solution that worked for me
Insert Mint 8 cd and start a live session
Launch Terminal (MENU, TERMINAL) and type sudo apt-get remove dmraid
When asked 'Do you want to continue' type y and click enter
Close Terminal and install Mint by clicking on the install icon on the deskop

I am having the same problem and the "fix" made it worse, I couldn't even get to the selection page for dual boot. Any other suggestions?? Thanks.

If you are running the Live CD, then open the terminal, type
inxi -F (enter) and post the output back here . .

It looks like it detected properly . .

Again from the Live CD, go to Menu->Control Center-> System-> Gparted . . what does it show ?

I don't know, everything looks proper, as we can see that your previous install attempt created the Linux partitions.
? ? ?
Can you do a CD Integrity check? When you first boot the CD, and get to the first Mint screen (when it is counting down the seconds) , hit the spacebar, arrow down to "Check Integrity of the CD". Let it run . . any errors ?

Reinstalled using OEM Installation from first Mint screen
No help. Now I get error: no such device: 92d45ff1-6470-41d7-b563-bf5946a2d044 if that makes a difference?

Now it is a different number ? ? ? I'm lost too ! Might be an idea to try another distro or two (or even Mint 7), to see if the problem persists. At least then you would know if it is a Mint issue, Distro version issue, or is completely hardware related. (I'm leaning towards the new Grub2 problems? - why I suggested Mint 7)
The last thing I can think of, is to check your Manufacturer's support website, to see if you have installed an incompatible hard drive.
I know that one of my IBM laptop's can only handle 5400 rpm drives.
Anyone else ?

This is just a hunch, not an expertly informed analysis.
Run the installer again but elect to manually partition your drive. In the partitioner, click on sda1 then click change. Use as ext4 (or maybe ext3?) and mount it as "/". sda5 should already be showing as swap in the partitioner. At the last installer dialogue (pg. 8 I think) make sure those two partitions will be formatted as ext4 and swap respectively.
Don't click advanced but rather, accept installation of GRUB in the default location. Click install.

The M60 is a fairly old model, does it support this particular 160GB drive? Have you updated the BIOS to whatever is the latest available? What options are available in the BIOS for the harddrive type, eg. ATA?

Have same problem. Went back to Mint7 and it works fine. I'm a complete newbe to Linux, so cannot work with commands, it seems that there is a fix for here

I can go down to the point "dpkg- reconfigure grub-pc" that gives me weird error and I stop not to mess up my current install. So if one of the Linux gurus can help it will be great for those who dont know commands.

I don't know why your UUID would change from boot to boot, unless you changed your partition size, maybe do the Memtest 86+
However, once you get to the grub menu, try editing the Helena boot menu option. Delete the search line, and change any root=UUID entry to one with /dev/sdX format.
Also, you can press "c" drop to a shell and start running commands like
Once you determine the correct device, you can do stuff like "linux" and "initrd" with tab completion to get the correct entry, then finally issue "boot".

Stop using UUID in your menu once you get into Helena.

True, long ago (Mint 4 or so), I had some issues when I had my hard drives physically attached to certain motherboard ports, and I decided I wanted in BIOS to change the boot order, Linux/grub got confused as to which was first in boot. I think it was a BIOS vs. ACPI difference. I guess that is why you have to modify your /boot/grub/device.map sometimes?
