long dual boot time after Helena installation SOLVED

Postby Helmut on Sun Jan 03, 2010 5:49 am

Hi Folks,

my system has one Win2000 on sda, and Helena on sdb. After turning the box on, you will hear some hard disc rattle and rattle, then after a full 22 seconds the the boot screen "choose OS" finally comes on. After that everything works fine, just as before on the same installation when it had Gloria instead of Helena.

Question:
Is it normal to expect this sort of Grub delay with Helena?

Cheers,
Helmut

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This is a problem with Grub 2 . When the OS installing Grub 2 is not on the same hard drive as the boot sector (aka MBR) it can take up to 30 seconds (or more) to open the boot menu. The only fix I know if is the obvious one - install Mint 8 on the same drive as the boot sector.

Aging Technogeek, thank you!

I shall just wait until the next Mint release and leave it as it is for the time being.
As a matter of fact, I did read Clem's comments on Grub after the latest Ubuntu was released, but didn't realize the consequences...
Cheers,
Helmut
