mint-desktop meta package? [SOLVED]

Postby zarknl on Tue Jan 26, 2010 11:52 am

Hi All

Is there a meta package mint-desktop or similar?

Like kubuntu-desktop or so, a package that will install (or check) everything necessary for mint, if "apt-get install mint-desktop" is run

If it is not there, maybe it would be nice if it would be there in the future?

Thanks!

Install on what?

Mint desktop only works on Linux Mint so if you have Linux Mint then you don't need the package 'mint-desktop' because you already have it, and if you don't have Linux Mint then the package will not work anyway.

I doubt it. Any other way would be a chore. What did you do? Would reinstalling be too much trouble?

Sorry for the late response, but I was cruising this section of the Forums looking for something myself, when I came across your question.

If you open Synaptic, reload your repositories, and then post a 'Search' for meta packages, I think you will find two that may be what you are looking for. There is a 'mint-meta-gnome' and a 'mint-meta-main'. If you take a look at them, depending on what you 'messed up', you can probably 're-install' one or both to get back to 'square one'.

Hope this helps.... :?:

Thanks!

I'll try the meta search...

I hoped that Linux and Mint Linux, would be so advanced, that something as reinstalling would not be necessary... (reminds me too much of Bill)

for testing i remove a random package: (i did "dpkg -l" and chose one)

apt-get remove yelp

then

apt-get install mint-meta-main
apt-get install mint-meta-gnome

unfortunately yelp does not come back then...

or did i do something wrong? does "apt-get install" work with meta packages? going to try aptitude and synaptic too! (later)

so? is there a meta package (or more) that i can use to check if al mint packages are there?

thanks!

funny, when i started aptitude without arguments (so in the text gui) it directly suggested to install yelp... (how does it know that?)

when i searched for "meta" i saw another meta package

mint-meta-universal

what would be the best command to let the system check all packages check ok with meta-mint-universal? (also mint-meta-main and mint-meta-gnome)

thanks!

JM2CW. Mint doesn't only use the mint meta packages, as it is based on ubuntu a working system also requires ubuntu meta packages. Additionally there are installed applications that are not in the meta packages. Simply restoring missing files will not necessarily repair a broken system if configuration files have been changed.

is it possible to construct a temporary meta package on a fully working system, and then apply that on a broken system?

maybe i can construct a full package list somehow...

thanks!

Reread the last sentence of my previous post. It's easier just to re-install than to attempt what you suggest, but it all depends on what the problems are.

thanks, i hoped for a more intelligent way of repairing than reinstalling...

self repair a Mint system seems difficult?

i am going to try now for a package list from a good system, and applying that to my broken system

on good system:

dpkg --get-selections > selections.txt

copy the selections.txt to broken system

on broken system:

dpkg --clear-selections
dpkg --set-selections < selections.txt
apt-get dselect-upgrade

going to try that! :-)

thanks!
