I decided to use a M$oft windows program Norton ghost to backup the whole disk so I could then put it on to another disk to install lots of other programs on to the second copy and still have the first one untouched. So far sounds a good idea, I thought. So I backed it up to an usb external drive, then went for lunch came out forgot where I was and replaced the original with the copy ! Of course this messed up and now grub doesn't boot up and just sits there thumbing it's nose at me. Grub does not even start so what can I do other than never use Ghost again of course !
this is a copy of what is present in the grub menu.lst if it helps.....
