I want to install MINT 8 main on a 30GB USB flash drive. I have 8Gb RAM on my computer and the user guide says to make the SWAP partition at least twice the system RAM. That means the SWAP is 16400 MB and the LINUX ext3 is only 14000 MB. When I make the Native Linux Partition as an ext3 it only installs to the 5% and stops.
Should I make the SWAP less than or equal to the Linux Native?
Can I make the Linux ext an ext4?
Or, is my USB thumb not capable of doing LINUX?

Try using XFS for your file system. I tried a lot of filesystem for a "linux on USB" and the XFS works great for USB devices since the read/write speed is slower compare to hard drives. As for Swap, you can even create it at the size of your RAM. You won't like to hibernate your system when running on USB since it consumes a lot of space. So a little more than 8GB is adequate for RAM.
When I tried installing Linux on USB I didn't care about the swap i just let the installer do the job to allocated the swap for me...
