[SOLVED ]Live CD runs only in safe graphics mode

My friend recently bought a HP Pavilion dv6000 (AMD Turion X2, NVidia GeForce, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB).

The Cassandra Live CD did not run in the 'default' mode, I had to run it in safe graphics mode.

Will the display work if I install it?

Another question is: Can I install Linux on a extended partition or does it have to be a primary partition??

The display will work when (and if) you install the driver for the video card (If it is an ATI you may have problems with Beryl and the like)
Linux can be installed in a logical partition

Its an NVidia card. If I install the drivers when running the Live session and then install Mint, will the drivers appear in the final install??

No.
whatever you install in Live will not be there after install of Mint.

install while in safe graphics mode and then boot off the hard disk and use envy to install the nvidia graphics driver.
some laptop nvidia video cards dont always work with the nv dirver. it is like they are too new.

The Restricted Driver Manager says that the hardware doesn't need any restricted drivers.

looking at the nvidia site it looks like that card is not supported yet.

so you would have to use the vesa driver used in safe mode.

Oh, thats sad...he bought an NVidia card mainly because Linux supports it better than it supports ATI!!

Anyways, can you please tell me how to install the 'vesa' driver??

Is it just that I install normally and do

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

And choose vesa as the driver??

I studied nvidia's driver page and go 7150 seems unsupported. I'm certain support will be added.
To get the vesa driver just do as int the troubleshooter for the liveCD, this part

you simply type in vesa as this is a built in "emergency" driver
And normally nvidia has excellent support in Linux....

You can use Envy's manual installation and choose the latest driver from there.

BTW the latest release of Envy automatically detects your graphic card.

The installtion worked, I dint have to do any tweaking to get the display. Wow!!

But Husse says the card is not even supported. Is there any risk in trying the manual installation.


I'm just inquisitive, but this one is not compulsory to answer...are you the same tseliot of the 'Ubuntu Forum Staff' and 'Envy' fame??

It worked!! A manual install of the latest NVidia driver did the job...!

Thanks guys, for your help....you saved my face (my friend had bought a laptop with NVidia card only bcoz I told him that Linux supports it better).

And guess what...once I showed him Beryl and its tricks, all he did was wonder how Linux can do all that at 28% RAM usage where Wista (that came pre-installed) struggled at 60% and still not doing anything!!
