Grub 2: my second Mint installation not listed [solved]

Post by RobHK »

I have Mint 8, Mint 8 Fluxbox and XP.

I installed Mint 8 first and Mint 8 FluxBox later. I used a separate /boot partition. All was well. Because of some issues with the main Mint 8 I reinstalled it. I formatted "/", "home" and "/boot".

When my boot menu appeared, Mint 8 FluxBox was not listed, but XP was. I ran update-grub and got the following:

Code: Select all

Generating grub.cfg ...
Found Debian background: linuxmint.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
Found memtest86+ image: /memtest86+.bin
Found Windows NT/2000/XP (loader) on /dev/sda1
Found Linux Mint 8 Helena - Fluxbox CE (8) on /dev/sda6
done
But on rebooting FluxBox was still not there

Here it is. May take a while to read! ;) I'm a partitioning freak. But /boot is sda7 and XP, Mint and Mint FB are all on sda.

I see there is a legacy grub remnant on sdb, that I didn't know was still there.

Code: Select all

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
    partition #7 for /grub.
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive
    in partition #2 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Uhm, yes I can see that! :) Not quite sure what's going on with your partitions on the second drive, but in relation to your problem it doesn't really matter, although you seem to have grub legacy in the MBR and another(?) boot loader in sdb8?

The problem with your grub2 is that you have specified the separate boot partition, sda7 as the /boot for both installations of mint. If you are going to have a separate boot partition it can only be referenced as such by one distro though preferably it should be independent. Also since you re-formatted sda5 when you re-installed, that version now has a different UUID for sda7 in it's fstab to the one being referenced by sd6. Can I ask you to have a look at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40992 which might better explain how to have a separate boot partition. Basically you should install grub to the partition for all distros other than one.

You'll need to decide which install of mint you want to control grub and then delete the entry for boot in the fstab on the other install. You'll probably also need to copy the /boot from the boot partition into the mint install which isn't referencing the boot partition otherwise you'll likely get errors when updating at some point.

It looks as though a separate boot partition looked like a good idea but wasn't. I reinstalled the Fluxbox CE with the /boot in the same partition and now my menu is OK. Just a few minor tweaks needed to get it running like before.

Am I likely to run into any problems with that redundant old entry in MBR on the second disk? If so, how do I remove it?

It shouldn't be a problem unless you change the drive boot order in the BIOS, in which case it will try to boot from the second drive. Some users do this to dual boot with Windows rather than using grub. You can delete it by running in a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1
from the LiveCD. Verify the disk is sdb with sudo fdisk -l or disable the first drive in the BIOS to prevent deleting the wrong MBR.

Re: Grub 2: my second Mint installation not listed in boot m

Well, I reinstalled Mint 8 Fluxbox with the /boot on the FB partition and now I can't see the Main Edition installation in the boot menu!

Again "update-grub" finds it:

Code: Select all

Generating grub.cfg ...
Found Debian background: linuxmint.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
Found Windows NT/2000/XP (loader) on /dev/sda1
Found Linux Mint 8 Helena - Main Edition (8) on /dev/sda5
done
But it doesn't appear at boot-up.

This is the content of results.txt. The garbage on drive 2 relates to the Windows installation.

Code: Select all

Re: Grub 2: my second Mint installation not listed in boot m

Post by remoulder »

Not sure why you re-installed again but now you have an unrecognised boot loader in your gnome installation and invalid entries in its fstab. Will get back to you when thinking a little clearer.
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

Thanks.

I didn't re-install "again" though. Same re-installation. Just didn't notice immediately that the Gnome Mint 8 wasn't in the menu.

I can probably sort out the fstab myself, but I haven't a clue about boot loaders.

Whichever partition grub2 points to is the one you need to boot to and update from. Same for the boot info script. You probably did, just making sure.

So sudo update-grub from Fluxbox edition didn't let Helena Main show up?

You could boot to Fluxbox and reinstall grub...

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
Let us know... :)

I had updated Grub, but did it again to be sure. It's an easy step to forget, since it wasn't necessary with the much-missed legacy Grub.

I re-installed grub as you suggested.

Code: Select all

robin@robin-desktop ~ $ sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
[sudo] password for robin:
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(fd0)	/dev/fd0
(hd0)	/dev/sda
(hd1)	/dev/sdb
robin@robin-desktop ~ $
Then updated:

Code: Select all

robin@robin-desktop ~ $ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for robin:
Generating grub.cfg ...
Found Debian background: linuxmint.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
Found Windows NT/2000/XP (loader) on /dev/sda1
Found Linux Mint 8 Helena - Main Edition (8) on /dev/sda5
done
(/boot is on the FluxBox installation on /dev/sda6)

No change. After reboot Main Edition is still not there

If you are comfortable with GRUB Legacy and you want it back,
here are the steps to accomplish that.

This Ubuntu tutorial will work for Linux Mint also.

I continued to use GRUB Legacy on Mint 8 and it worked great.

(I don't know why it's even called GRUB 2 since it is actually GRUB 1.97 Beta)

And to those that would try and convince me of the merits of GRUB 2
I say this "Sure, I will be happy to try it - when it's out of beta"

I did just that, Mick.

Rebooted and I'm still booting 1.97 beta. My grub.old and grub directories are identical. Lots of single files and no subdirectories.

Went through the routine again: messages told me nothing changed because already done.

Renamed grub to see what happened and couldn't boot. (So used a live Parted Magic CD to rename back.)

Synaptic says I have grub installed and not grub2!

You have them both installed.

This is from your boot info report

Code: Select all

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
    partition #6 for /boot/grub.
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive
    in partition #2 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Your PC is set to boot to your first hard drive (/dev/sda) so it boots GRUB2.

In your BIOS change the boot order to your second drive (/dev/sdb)
and you will boot to GRUB Legacy.

Or overwrite GRUB2 with GRUB Legacy.

I'm out of my depth here so I have to just do as I'm told. But the boot on /dev/sdb is an old one. Somebody above suggested I might delete it, but said it wasn't really necessary. Both my root partitions are on /dev/sda. This was deliberate because GRUB 2 took ages to load anything from the second drive.

Overwriting Grub 2 with grub legacy is what I just tried to do. But it didn't work.

I'll try to delete the Grub on /dev/sdb as suggested above and see if that helps.

Seems like whatever I do I still have Grub2 in the MBR of sda and grub0.97 in the MBR of sdb, and it's Grub2 that boots.

This my current resuts.txt

Re: Grub 2: my second Mint installation not listed in boot m

Post by RobHK »

Finally sorted it.

After a lot of trial and error (mostly error!) I got 0.97 installed. I had to fiddle with menu.lst quite a bit, but at least there I have a vague idea of what I'm doing.

Now have a boot menu with both Mints plus XP.

Glad you got it sorted. :D

For reference purposes, how did you do it?
