I downloaded the linuxmint-9-lxde-rc-i386.iso image and tried installing on VirtualBox where the host OS is Win XP, however right after grub it hangs and doesn't recover. This occurs on the compatible mode bootup in the grub menu, too.
Any ideas as to why this might happen?

Well I had only problems with VirtualBox under Windows XP.
