Error while installing Linux from harddisk

Postby wa2n on Thu Sep 13, 2007 4:49 am

Hello,

I have a problem, I've tried install Linux Mint from harddisk since my CD ROM has broken. I used the grub4dos for booting from GRUB. See
http://instantfundas.blogspot.com/2007/08/install-any-linux-distro-directly-from.html

But I got an error message like this:
Error 17: File not found
Booting 'find /boot/grub/menu.lst'
Error 20: Select cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

Please help...
Thanks....

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Installing from a hard disk is not supported. You may, or more likely may not, succeed.
Is your computer old?
Sounds like it's rather old and you put grub to far "into" the disk - probably the 8 GB limit (or 1024 limit)

Thanks for you reply Husse,

Actually I copied the grub4dos,vmlinuz, and initrd.gz in my first partition of harddisk.
About my computer here is some of the details:
Mainboard: P4X266 (VT8753)
Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1500 MHz
Memory: 256 DDR

Maybe it's a rather old. Is there any possibilities that I can install Linux Mint without CD drives?

It's old (to be a computer :)) 256 MB is a problem - it is barely possible to boot the live cd with that
You could create a boot partition to help a bit
Error 20: Select cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS
This indicates you are to "far into" the disk, unless it's an erroneous error
