After Installing Mint 9, Mouse & keyboard are disabled

Post by dnmint »

I have a HP Compaq Pressario SR5250Il.
I had Gloria 64 bit installed originally.
I got Mint CD (My daughter bought it from USA).
I installed Mint 9 on the same partitions as Gloris over writing it.
On restart, the mouse & keyboard do not work.... I had to switch off power to get out
Any advice pls. Thanks

I tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 also replacing Mint 9. It also gives the same problem.
Possibilities are
I had ext3 in the earlier version of Gloria. Now it is ext4
I have 12GB for /, 3gb for swap, rest about 50gb for /home in both...
Grub2 loaded in both times. As I select Linux, it boots.
But as I select any application ( Mouse works ok till then but freezes thereafter.I have to poweroff to come out.
Please advise.
Should I format the whole partition again ?
I need grub to get into my Win XP partition.
I am stuck....Please help

Managed to get to terminal via Recovery mode...
The out puts are
lspci - shows Intel 82945G/G2 Integrated Graphics controller (rev02)
lsmod shows i915 in a few places not i810
Will this help in resolving the issue...
Look fwd to your further advice

I got this from Ubuntu Forum ( I have same problem with Lucid too)
Posting it here to see whether I can get some help for Isadora too

You could make a xorg.conf file and edit it manually.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=44871

http://linux.fi/wiki/X.orgin_asetukset

http://translate.google.fi/translate?js ... l=fi&tl=en

An example keyboard:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard1" #Kutsumanimi
Driver "kbd" #Ajuri
Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30"
#Suomalaiset asetukset
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "fi"
EndSection

Mouse:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto" #Tunnistetaan protokolla automaattisesti
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" #Hiiren laitetiedosto
#Rullalla vierittäminen
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
#Kolmannen näppäimen emulointi kahta päänäppäintä painamalla
#Suositeltava erityisesti hiirissä, joissa ei ole painettavaa rullaa
Option "Emulate3Buttons"

It would be helpful if we knew something about your mouse and keboard.

Are they USB?

Or Wireless?

Brand name?

Can you use the keyboard to select "recovery mode" at the grub menu?

If you do not see a grub menu, press shift until it appears.

If you can access recovery mode then provide the output of these commands.
(just the keyboard and mouse parts)

Code: Select all

lspci

Code: Select all

lsusb
thanks

It helps eliminates some possibilities.

It would help a lot more if you answered ALL the questions I asked,
and provided the output of the commands I requested.

If you can boot up and run this command it would tell us a lot.Copy/paste the output here.

Code: Select all

dmesg
The more information you can provide, the quicker we can get this resolved.

Re: After Installing Mint 9, Mouse & keyboard are disabled

Post by mick55 »

Open a terminal and run these commands and then reboot.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
After you reboot run this command and post the output

Code: Select all

inxi -F
I am also not sure what OS you are trying to fix.

Originally you said you installed Mint 9, and in your last post you
say "I use Win XP dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04".

So which is it? Or are you using Win XP, Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9?

You ain't making this easy. :P

A 1000 apologies. Let me do one by one :?
  • 1. I have Win XP in the 1st partition with one more NTFS partition for my Win files.
I initially installed Mint 9 in the 2 nd partition 13GB with 3 GB swap & balace about 60 GB for /home
As I had problem of Keyboard freeze, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 over Mint 9 with the same GB allocations.( Both Linux were from moriginal CDs bought - not downloaded from Net)
Now I have Win XP & Ubuntu 10.04 ( Both 32 bit only)
Finding the same problem, knowing that Mint 9 is based on Lucid I have stopped with this If I could fix it in Lucid, I presume, the steps would be similar in Isadora.
Trying to resolve this problem in both Ubuntu Forum & Mint Forum
I could do the last post with details of dmesg after selecting Ubuntu Recovery Mode & then Ubuntu Lo Graphic mode ( I prsume i915 or whatever is disabled then as I had no problem of Mouse- Keyboard freeze)
I ran both update & upgrade commands in this mode. It did get a few updates & no upgrades
However inxi -F returned no inxi found
I treied booting in Lucid normal boot. Ctrl-Alt-F1
    Ran inxi after logging in
It returned no inxi command found
Here I am ..baring it all
There is a boot option under 'Lo graphics mode about configuring graphics. Dd not venture tere ...without specific guidance
Hope you can help. It appears to me that something in graphics is hindering.

Re: After Installing Mint 9, Mouse & keyboard are disabled

Post by mick55 »

inxi is a default component in MINT which is why you didn't find in in UBUNTU.

I was thinking that the lack of keyboard /mouse support might be a kernel related issue.

here are some more commands for you to run.

This one will tell me your kernel version.Copy/paste the output here.

Code: Select all

uname -a
This one will install inxi

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install inxi
Now you can run inxi. Copy/paste the output here.

Code: Select all

inxi -F
Lets try an upgrade again.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
After the upgrade reboot and run this command again. Copy/paste the output here.

Code: Select all

uname -a
thanks

I am posting in sequence ( after logging in in Lo graphics mode.
1. uname -a .....Linux dnmint-desktop 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Then on installing inxi the following:
2. dnmint@dnmint-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install inxi
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package inxi
dnmint@dnmint-desktop:~$ inxi -f
inxi: command not found

There was 0 packages upgraded on both commands
for last uname -a the out put is Linux dnmint-desktop 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
That is all it says ..... in Lo graphics mode

I believe a kernel update may solve your problem.

We will have to do it manually, but it is not very hard to do.

You just need to download these files and then INSTALL THEM IN THIS ORDER:

linux-headers all.deb

linux-headers i386.deb

linux-image i386.deb

After you have downloaded and installed these 3 files, you will need to manually
update grub to add the new kernel to the menu. Use this command

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Then reboot and try the new kernel option.

(You can install the deb files by double-clicking them and selecting "install package".)

My apologies.
Did all that got one more kernel option over & above the earlier two.
Booted in the new kernel.
Mouse- Keyboard froze.
Sorry to keep bothering you.
Apparently I have to change my Xdriver from i915 to i810 ...but not able to do so..
Any advice further..
P.S> I am learning some with all these... hopefully when we clinch it a lot more for me & others with similar issues...

Congratulations on updating your kernel. :)

More commands for you to run. :P

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
If this does nothing to help, you can reinstall it with this command.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
You may or may not have an xorg.conf file, run this command to find out.
If it exists, copy/paste the output here.

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Copy/paste the output of this command

Code: Select all

uname -a

After removing xorg file as per previous post.... logged in normal mode.
The Mouse Keyboard are working normally as can be seen from this post.
Should I install some other grphics file now? i810 in place of i915 or so ?
Thanks

From Synaptic package manager
xserver-xorg-video-intel
X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver

This package provides the driver for the Intel i8xx and i9xx family
of chipsets, including i810, i815, i830, i845, i855, i865, i915, i945
and i965 series chips.

It looks as if there is no other choice for Intel chipset support in this version of Linux Mint.
