Laptop keyboard

I have Bianca (2.6.17-11) on a laptop Fujitsu-Siemens PA1510 that I mostly use with an external USB keyboard with no problems.
I tried to install Cassandra but I get that if the USB keyboard is connected, the internal kb doesn't work.
This is a problem to me because I lose the caps & number lock leds and the use of some special function keys (volume, contrast, etc.)
Does anybody know what is changed ? (in the kernel, I think, thus I get the same with other new distros).

As you suspect the kernel is one place to look into
It could also be how your xorg.conf is setup - have you got any chance to compare?

How can I find what is changed in the kernel about keyboard managing ??
The problem is the same in consolle mode, so I think is not related to Xorg.conf.

Yes if you mean a "real TTY" not gnome terminal
