Boot pauses for 1 minute, then continues solved

Postby codesplice on Thu Sep 20, 2007 4:57 pm

Hey all,
Slight trouble with my recent Mint install on a Compaq Deskpro (1000MHz P3, 512MB RAM). Once it gets to the graphical boot screen, it just chills there for a little bit. The progress bar doesn't move, the hard drive indicator light doesn't blink.... it seems like nothing is happening. This goes on for about a minute before the boot-up process resumes like normal. The system works flawlessly once it's up.

I disabled the "quiet" boot parameter in GRUB, and it seems that it is hanging up on the section labeled "Waiting on root filesystem".

Ideas?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You could try if the situation improves if you add the parameter "noapic" to GRUB (that should be the same line where you removed "quiet" ...)

Thanks, I'll go try that in just a moment.

Also, I'll note that I don't have the pause if I do a soft reboot.... only after a full system halt does it take forever to boot.

I also disabled the splash for one boot process, which gave me a little bit more information (I think)

Code: Select all
ata2.00: atapi, max udma/33
ata2.00: qc timeout cmd 0xef
ata2.00: failed to set xfer mode (err_mask=0x4)
ata2.00: limiting speed to udma/33:pi03
ata2.: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs
ata2.00: qc timeout (cmd 0x3f)
ata2.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
ata2.00: disabled

On another note... just watched the system finish booting, and I'm presented with a root prompt :-/

I'll try booting with the "noapic" option and see what happens.

Thank you.

Solved :-D

Searching everywhere eventually led me to a thread on Ubuntuforums, where I found this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... ostcount=4

Long story short, adding "irqpoll" to my kernel boot parameters fixed it.

It also fixed my inability to access my CDROM drive, which I was also about to post about :)
