Dual-booting problems

Post by evank »

Howdy, fellow Minters!

I’ve been using Linux Mint since Isadora was released, and I have to say, it’s a winner—well done!

I am, however, having an issue during the boot sequence: it takes several minutes to get to the rEFIt bootloader screen where it used to take far less than a minute—meaning it takes several minutes for me to start using Linux Mint. Sad! If you all have some time, I could use some help getting it back in good shape. You can find some background information below.

I’m currently dual-booting on a Mac Book Pro (5.1 Unibody, Fall 2008) that is also running Snow Leopard (10.6.4) using rEFIt – http://refit.sourceforge.net/. (For the record, there was a previous install of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope on this laptop, but was removed during the Snow Leopard install—it didn’t like that something else was using the hard disk.

When installing Isadora, I followed the instructions found here – https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBo ... _5-2/Lucid. Yes, I’m aware it’s on Ubuntu’s site, but it worked like a champ. I still had rEFIt from the previous Ubuntu installation and decided to upgrade rEFIt as well, as mine was a couple of versions old (I don’t remember what the previous version was anymore, but it’s now 0.14—the current version). One of the last steps is to ask rEFIt to sync the partition tables (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Macte ... d%20Ubuntu – under the “Fix the Partition Tables” header). I remember this working just fine when I had Jaunty installed, but ever since I’ve installed Isadora, I haven’t been able to do so. When I attempt to ask for the partition tables to be synched, I get the following message:

Code: Select all

rEFIt - Partitioning Tool

Starting gptsync.efi

Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 48 409639 EFI System (FAT)
2 409640 444743719 Mac OS X HFS+

6 484665344 486490111 Linux Swap

Current MBR partition table:
# A Start LBA End LBA Type
1 1 409639 EE EFI Protective
2 * 409640 444743719 AF Mac OS X HFS+
3 486491767 488397134 82 Linux Swap
4 1 444747775 EE EFI Protective

Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap.
Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi

(Here’s a screenshot of the error just in case I mistyped something:)

I suspect that the reason why rEFIt is so darn slow to load is because of this synching issue. Do any of you awesome people have any thoughts on how resolve this issue?

Thanks!
Evan

You could try to boot using the USB-boot-stick and count seconds ... or minutes. If Mint boots faster that way, there is some trouble in your bootloader..
