I have never been comfortable with a "touch pad" since I bought an IBM keyboard with a "track Point" when they first came out with one many years ago for use in the cramped quarters of my motor home. I loved it.
I was using Mint 6 or 7 when I bought my laptop. I was able to disable the touch pad without any trouble in the mouse configuration option, but with the Great??? improvement in Mint 9, I no longer can.
(for my "main frame" I use a "Bat" instead of a keyboard, so I don't have that problem)
Some help would be most welcome.

Press "Alt-F2" and type gconf-editor then goto desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad and disable it
