Hi, I am trying to install linux mint 9 lxde on a really old compaq armada m300 laptop I have lying around.
The problem is that it doesn't have enough ram to successfully boot from the livecd, I was wondering if there was a text-based way of installing like with the ubuntu alternate install cds or
if there are any other ways I could go about installing it?
Also here is a guide I found relating to xubuntu incase it is useful to anyone:

Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

You can make an USB-swap-stick. For making you can use GParted or command line. Command line way:amesnih wrote:Hi, I am trying to install linux mint 9 lxde on a really old compaq armada m300 laptop I have lying around.

1. Make swap partition first
2. Make swap (eg partition sdb1)

sudo mkswap -c /dev/sdb1
PS. Lucid Puppy works fine with Armada M300 ..
Re: Alternate install from CD or other?
Hey cheers for the reply, that sounds interesting...
I've managed to get it booting from a usb-stick using plop bootmanager.. yet linux mint still wont load all the way to desktop.
If I just make a usb-swap-stick like you said, will the linux mint live cd know to use it when booting up?
Or is there a way to make a bootable usb stick version of linux mint which also has a swap partition, so I could then install from it?
Hmm will also take a look at lucid puppy now...

Re: Alternate install from CD or other?
Linux uses swap automatically, so USB-swap works fine (maybe slower than HD-swap, but..). You can use 2 USB-stick on Armada M300, but you need a USB-divider. Actually Armada does not boot from USB ..amesnih wrote: If I just make a usb-swap-stick like you said, will the linux mint live cd know to use it when booting up?
