You're probably right that it is a video problem
I guess you can begin booting and that the crash comes at the end of the process. My answer assumes that.
Boot into "Recovery mode" - note that in recovery mode you are root - be careful! Never use startx here
My guess is that for some reason the nv driver is used and that your card don't like it - it's like that for me.
Follow the advice int the troubleshooter for the live CD (useful here as well) to change to the vesa driver (that is what's used in Safe graphics mode)

You should now see the desktop, but the video is no good. Start Envy from the menu and install the driver (if for some reason you have a Celena beta you have to upgrade to the latest Envy)
Now you should be OK

Add the following as a boot parameter :
" noapic noirqdebug nosmp"

and it will work fine
