Not a COM32R image

Postby henkoegema on Sun Nov 14, 2010 4:18 pm

I'm trying to make a boot-able USB stick for LinuxMint10.
To do that, I use Ubuntu10.10. System->Administration->Startup disk creator.

However I can't boot with that USB stick.
Error message:
vesamenu.c32:not a COM32R image
boot:
vesamenu.c32:not a COM32R image
boot:
etc
etc

I'm having this same problem using Startup Disk Creator to make a USB persistent boot.

Doing a little research, it may be because of the current version of Syslinux, which is 4.01.

You can download the newer 4.03 version tar.gz file here: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/

Can someone help with an install of this?

Found an easy temp solution.

At the boot prompt:

hit tab
type "live"
press enter

I'm getting the exact same problem with the 64-bit main edition of Julia, right down to the same error
message.

Though thanks to your tip - it is working now - and the drive is persistent as well.

I'm running on AMD 64 Triple-Core - 4Gb RAM - ATI-Radeon Gfx on a new HP ProBook.

On the desktop I built around an i5-750 and Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Mobo, my USB-STICK will
just not boot AT ALL with Mint; no matter what changes I make in the bios.

I really want to get this sorted out and am determined to do so.
I know it's doable and it's just annoying, so I'll let you know how I get on.

I'd never even heard of Mint till 24 hours ago though, being a total virgin to Linux, so
I'm not doing too badly........thanks to your help!

I also would like some info on how to install the new syslinux version. I am looking into it, but
any pointers would be helpful.

Btw, I only just burned the .iso and am running from the Live CD, as I am only just starting out
and will do a 'proper' install alongside my Win7 when I'm feeling a bit more adventurous.
Everything else working like a dream though, apart from this little niggle.

Anyway, your advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

I solved it by using mint 9 to actually make usb stick, but you need a a mint 10 iso laying around then. Either make a mint 9 usb stick and use a mint 10 cd/dvd or runt mint 9 as dvd/cd and have a mint 10 iso on another usb stick (you will need 2 usb sticks then) or have the iso on a hdd. Not the smoothet way but it works.

No offense thinkpad, but you lost me a little bit.

I think it is probably easier just hitting tab and typing "live" as 'mintnoob' suggested, if that solves your problem,
as it did mine.

It is little effort and you get a persistent drive to save your stuff at the end of it.

Would you care to explain and give some specs of your system/install and as to what exactly you mean?

I'm confused though, as to the different intalls laying around. On what partition, OS, version of Mint etc..???

Sorry, but as a noob, I wouldn't have a clue where to start to implement your solution.

But thanks for your input - maybe you could make it a little clearer what you are doing?

Thanks.

Platform: Ubuntu 11.10 x86_6
Target: linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-64bit.iso

This worked for me:

1. Format your USB stick with FAT using Ubuntu's Disk Utility
2. Use Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator and locate the Linux Mint ISO to write to your USB
3. Boot the USB

This is what I saw:

Error message:
vesamenu.c32:not a COM32R image
boot:

4. Press TAB
5. Type 'live' without the quotes
6. Hit ENTER

Linux Mint 12 then booted to the desktop, where I could then proceed to install to my system.

Hope this helps someone.
