Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
I have a new HP laptop probook 4525 with win 7 pro, I wanted to dual boot with Julia. I'm trying to install with the 64bit CD-iso. Live CD boots, I go to install and when I get to the partition options I don't see the side by side option that I keep seeing in all the tutorials. I know I can do manual partioning by why doesn't it recognize my windows installation?

Re: Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
Figured it out, all set. It was an issue of too many primary partitions. Once I deleted my HP_Tools and Recovery partitions and re-ran setup it saw win7 and gave the side by side option.
Re: Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
Factory install machines with Win 7 almost always have one or two " hidden " primary partitions beside the C:drive partition. Those hidden partition should be kept as they have important tools for Windows. For this reason I ALWAYS reduce the size of C:drive to make empty space, and immediately make an Extended partition of this empty space. Then make Logical partitions for ALL Linux. There is no reason for Linux to use a Primary partition, unless it is the only operating system on the machine.
Re: Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
Actually, you probably should have removed partition 4 ( sda4).
as it was the w95 partition. & possible a data partition. < D: >

Sd 4 is one of the ones I removed, that was the HP_tools partition.
Re: Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
I have the same problem. I have windows 7 installed right now, but want to dual boot mint 10 next to it, but can't choose the side by side option.
after I typed: "sudo fdisk -l" I got this:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

/dev/sda1 1 1459 11712512 27 Unknown
/dev/sda2 * 1459 1472 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 1472 60802 476569624 7 HPFS/NTFS
Does anyone knows what is wrong?

Re: Mint 10 no Side by side option for install on win 7
ali-popma.
It looks as though your Windows 7 is installed on sda3 , and sda2 is some kind of Windows bootloader.
Was there some kind of Windows bootloader installed at one time.
If you wanted to use sda1 for Linux , you would make sda1 an Extended partition with the same partition number ( sda1 ) and make Logical partitions within it for Linux.
If you could run a Live Linux with GPartEd , it would show your present layout better.
