Hard drive install

Postby goltuna1 on Thu Oct 18, 2007 1:07 am

for the second time i check that there is no /dev/sda.. in the fresh install and of course no boot at all with grub. The Live-Cd works like a charm an nothing to complain about.
I installed grub on the main root partition (hd0,5) instead of (hd0) as it is offered in the advanced mode in order to avoid to erase my XOSL boot manager .
I have a simple computer with a 120 mb ide drive 32 bits 512mb mem and 6 other Linux and 1 Windows installed.
Any help?
Tks in advance

Welcome to Mint goltuna1
We have to clarify
You look into Mint from another distro and find no /dev/sda (or /dev/hda ?)
Is Mint in sda6?
I think you can't select (hd0,5) instead of (hd0) only hd1 or hd2 and so forth as the second integer - in your case 5 controls where /boot/grub is placed
If you do so it will either fail or perhaps put Mint's grub on the wrong partition
I'd say ouch! This is kind of a bug
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
