stuck at grub resuce after loading grub to mbr,,

Post by sjonesy »

Hi all, Ill start by saying I luv mint out of all the distros I've worked on. That being said, I'm at a loss now. I wasn't happy with the first install so I deleted the partition from the ext. hd it was on and began to reinstall, rebooted to the grub rescue prompt. I had the bios setup originally to boot from the ext. drive first, but it was giving me issues in vista so I re-ordered it to start from normal C drive, bad mistake as now grub is looking for a device that doesn't exist. Im a bit perplexed here because I'm fairly sure that grub is in fact on C drive as I recall doing this to avoid vista issues. If that is the case, then grub is still there, it's just not giving me the option to boot to anything.
Before i go any further, I can't boot from the ext cd/dvd as it's a usb device and the internal cd is hosed on the laptop. I need to get back to vista to fix any of this.
Thabks for listening.
output from ls is ---
(hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1)

Hi sjonesy!
Please format your post (offsets) to better read them.
You should post some information; start a terminal, enlarge the window and type:

Code: Select all

inxi -F
Copy / paste the output by choosing Code in your POST A REPLY and pasting the content between the 2 pairs of brackets.
I don't understand what your last 2 rows mean.

Sorry for the long post.
Unkown command 'inxi'
I'm writing this on a different machine with debian installed, only my laptop has windows. Can't copy and paste from laptop, so here goes--
output from ls is ---
(hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1)

What I mean is I had a dual boot mint/vista setup going and went to reinstall mint without thinking to put grub on the ext. usb drive, which had been working fine.

Hi!
Could you please clarify: What is your initial situation? Desktop computer or laptop? Windows installed as first operating system? Which Linux did you download? Did you check the md5sum? Can you boot to your live desktop?

I would just look over some of the Grub2 operations and try a few things
--you can save your MBR from windows, if that is still working

And windows can screw it up for Grub2

Ok, Win was not first OS, C drive was untouched until I put grub on it. I really doubt its an md5 issue, but I had used the same disk to do first install.
The machine in question is a laptop compaq f700.
Linux mint 10, which if I had left alone would have been trouble free.

Problem as I see it now is that grub is pointing a device/partition that doesnt exist. yes I know putting grub on mbr was a bad idea, had I been thinking normally I would not have done that.

Interesting reading, though I had not installed anything new to windows prior to this accident. Is there by chance a list of the offending programs?

Hmm, I've been a little slow on the uptake, just installed mint 10 to the orginal usb drive from my debian lenny box, making sure to load grub onto it,lol. Got windows back, it seems when mint booted it automatically scanned the system for other os's and updated grub accordingly. very handy. Thanks to everyone who responded.
