how do I format an external hard drive?

I am running linux mint debian and I am trying to format another hard drive through a usb adapter. I need help figuring out how to do this please.

You can use fdisk to format if you are familiar with Command Line

You can also install gparted , then use gparted to format your drive or partition in Graphic User Interface GUI mode.

to install gparted, sudo apt-get install gparted from terminal

thanks man that got it formatted now how do i install linux on it I wish I was better with terminal. Still learning
