cannot boot - kernel panic - after update (solved)

Post by jemkeith »

I'm using Mint KDE 9. I just ran updates and I then rebooted. Now I get a message saying [0.924938] kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
I have no idea what to do now. Any help?

Can you not drop into grub and boot from an earlier kernel?

I don't have a grub menu or how to make it visible if there is one.

Okay, that worked. Am I going to have to hold down the shift key and select a different kernel every time I boot my laptop up now?

Is there anyway I can fix the problem? I can hold shift when I boot and pick an older kernel from grub's menu, but isn't there anyway to fix this besides reinstalling?

Any ideas on how to fix this problem? It's really frustrating to have to hold down the shift key, then pick a different kernel...

Run a live CD

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
