LMDE 201101 hangs on grub installation

Post by squigly »

Good day all
(LMDE first timer)

I'm trying to install LMDE (201101, made sure md5 checks out fine)
When the installer gets to the "configuring grub" screen it just hangs there till the end of time.

Installation media is a USB thumb drive, this happens regardless of the filesystem I choose (I know it's not related ,just putting it out there).
It's an ATOM with nvidia ION, SATA2 drive (not SSD).

Any thoughts?

may be something to do with the hard disk partition?
perhaps you can boot with USB thumb, then click terminal,
type sudo fdisk -l <enter>and post the result,
also type sudo parted -l print <enter> and post result.

Well, if you brought this up, when I've setup the partitions, there was an unallocated 1 mB slice which didn't go away.
I've deleted all allocated space, setup two partitions (root + swap) starting at the begining of the disk, but that 1 mb unallocated was still there.
Do you think it has something to do with it?

Hi squigly!
Please first read my help (and my HOWTOs mentioned there).
You can have several unallocated spaces - no problem at all.

[Solved] LMDE 201101 hangs on grub installation

Post by squigly »

Hey mates,
Just thought I recap on this, maybe someone else would benefit.

My problem was that the partition was setup (in gpartd) as BTRFS, but was formated as ext4 (or at list, this is my understanding of the problem).

Thing is, I thought I'd give btrfs a spin, not RTFM'ing properly, I wasn't aware it can be done on root partition as of now (or so I understand),
So I just changed the option in the installer to ext4, which apparently, didn't solve it.

What I did eventually:
ran fdisk, completely trashed all the present partitions, re-run the installer, setup the partition with gpartd (one for root as ext4, one for swap) and that's it, worked like a charm.

Thanks for the help,
cheers.
