Re: kids messed my pc HELPP

Post by mastablasta »

all this information doesn't tell if it's a wubi install or not. though there is a hint in the final partitioning part.

so best thing is to run bootinfo script found here: http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/

Follow the instructions on the page. The script will tell where the issue occurs and also if it is safe for you to simply repair grub. post the results file here.

ok it seem you don't have wubi install, so you could safely try to restore grub
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... =0#p293155

But you might wait a bit maybe someone that knows more about grub will be able to help you. However i think it could be just that main boot sector (grub) got corrupted somehow. it happens.

Reinstalling windows will overwrite grub which means you will lose the ability to boot Linux.

BUT
also if i instaled a different linux, not mint cant remeber name but found one i would liek to try
As you want to install Linux again anyway that will replace grub and allow you to boot both systems again.
will i loose all my data
Well you seem to have a separate /home partition
/dev/sda1 /home ext4 (rw)
Should do it.

So as long as you elect to NOT format this partition when installing Linux you should not lose your data (assuming that is where it is). However you will end up with a very strange mixture of configuration files on your new install which is almost guaranteed to cause problems. This is why a /home partition is always a bad idea. What I would do is to reinstall windows on sdb1 then install linux on sda5 only (in other words no separate /home partition). When you have Linux installed you can then modify /etc/fstab to have it mount /sda1 within your home folder. Something like:

Code: Select all

/dev/sda1 /home/yourusername/data -ext4 defaults 0 1
You will then have a separate data partition which means you will not lose data however many times you switch distros and because the configuration files it contains will not interfere with the newly installed distro, then that should run properly also.

Having done that I would then tidy things up by removing everything from sda1 that is not your own personal data.

That is what I would do but there are no rules here, others do things differently, it is all a matter of personal opinion and preference, ultimately you must choose how you want to proceed.

is totally unrelated to your issue, as it happens to me in a fresh install in OpenSUSE 11.3
But how did you "fix" this issue?

Itid8,

Please do not open new topics just to direct possible helpers to this topic. I deleted your other post in Installation and Boot as a duplication of this topic.

If you feel that your topic is sliding down the board and not getting new responses, just bump it by posting to the topic. Most people just post the word "Bump" when they want to bump their topic up the board.

The only thing we ask is, do not bump too often. Once every two or three days should be enough.

Windows is on a seperate harddisk: you can disconnect the 1st disk, then reinstall Windows, and plug the Linux disk back in.
By the way, the Win XP installer does not support installing on a 2nd disk, as far as I know.
