Boot Problem (il loads only one time on two)

I have tryed to install linux many times..
but always grub didn't work. (error 15 and 22)

I think that the problem was caused by my raid card (that allow me to use my two IDE HDD but the raid function is disabled)
Infact when i fisically disabilited it whe install procedure worked!

Now i have reabilited my raid card on motherboard but i have another problem!

The boot doesn't work everytime, but only sometime! After the selection of the version to load ( linux mint based on ubuntu 7.04) the boot stops and the only thing that i can do is to reset, hoping that the next time will work (like a lottery!)

i always think that informatics is a exact science, but maybe it isn't so!

i post here also mi HW configuration...and ask me i u need some info or log!

Which disk is Mint installed on?
What else (Windows?) do you have and how does it work?
I also see JMicron and according to some sources JMicron and Linux are not happy together...
And no - computers is no exact science

I did state that jmicron and Linux do not mix, On the distro I installed, the cdrom device could not be used because of no jmicron driver support, therefore I had to install from USB stick, thats why I suggested but reading again I see that installing is not the problem.

I mst read the questions, I must read.....

I had cyclical starts on occasions after the install, the same as the poster I ended up installing custom kernel from http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ But this was Debian

I do not know how the latest kernels work but I know myself and others had lots of problems with jmicron

Which disk is Mint installed on?

Mint is installed as a partition of the 320 Maxtor disk (the one NOT behind the raid card)

What else (Windows?) do you have and how does it work?

I have installed also 2 xp on the same HDD and they works perfectly..never had a problem on Win (and this thing drive crazy!)

i don't know if it can help you but i have done a screenshot of the boot procedure to let you see where the boot stops.



i hope that this new info can help you!

ps: if someone can help me to reduce the size tell me how!

It's the Jmicron controller that gives you problems
Try editing /boot/grub/menu.lst and change the options "quiet splash --" with "nosplash noapic noacpi --".
It's only the first line with quiet splash you need to change (in the first go)
If you have success remove nosplash noapic noacpi one at a time to minimize the impact

i edited it with gedit (with sudo permission)

but nothing! it don't work!

also if i've changed mint version 3.1 -> 4.0 with the new kernel, but it was not helpful!

what i have to do?

change the jmicron card?
trash the pc?

modify the file

add the parameter "all-generic-ide" to the line
keneral vmlinuz *************

b) Get a different motherboard

c) try a netinstall CD of Debian,(lenny or from my above post) when installed:

and if it works OK

Do "apt-get install gnome"

"apt-get install xorg"

Add multimedia repositories

i tried but the boot stops at the same point.
I want also to underline that with mint 4.0 i installed the SO without problem, and sometime the boot works! without a apparenty cause!

Hi

I meant get a motherboard without the Jmicron controller
as I think that is the cause of your problems.

I suggested Debian as that is is the only Linux I have installed
without problems with the jmicron, no you will not end up
with Mint
