Linux Mint No Longer Boots

Post by Clyde Machine »

Okay, so I've got an.... interesting issue.

Went to try openSUSE and decided to install it on my system, which is already running Windows XP and Linux Mint 9 Isadora. I've triple-booted this computer before with no problems, but I had problems installing openSUSE that seem to have now ruined my Linux Mint partition.

When I go to log in to Linux Mint, the splash screen loads with the colour-changing dots, but when I hit the left/right arrow keys to see what's going on the screen overflows with errors. I'll go back and get details of what it says, but if anyone can help me with where to go from here to fix my Mint partition short of reformatting and reinstalling please do!

Thanks,
- Clyde

We need some more details
Pls post the result of

Code: Select all

fdisk -l 2>/dev/null | egrep "Disk /|/dev/" | sed "s#^/dev/#Part /dev/#" | awk '{print $2}' | sed 's/://' | xargs -n1 -IX sudo sh -c "hexdump -v -s 0x80 -n 2 -e '2/1 \"%x\" \"\\n\"' X | xargs -n1 -IY sh -c \"case \"Y\" in '48b4') echo X: GRUB 2 v1.96 ;; 'aa75' | '5272') echo X: GRUB Legacy ;; '7c3c') echo X: GRUB 2 v1.97 or higher ;; *) echo X: No GRUB Y ;; esac\""
which will tell us on which partitions there is a grub installed and

Code: Select all

fdisk -l
which displays your disk layout with it's partitions. You also should tells us which OS you have installed on which partition.

Other details:
/dev/sda1 is Windows XP Pro.
/dev/sda2 is an extended partition.
/dev/sda3 is 8MB of swap space.
/dev/sda5 is Linux Mint 9 GNOME.
/dev/sda6 is now openSUSE.

/dev/sdb1 is my external harddrive, only for storage.

Before discovering my Mint crashing, I opted to not install a new bootloader during openSUSE's install process, and since I haven't been able to get into Mint at all to update the GRUB2, I can't boot into openSUSE yet. Don't know if that's worth mentioning, but there you go. :P

I hope that's all the info you guys need. I attempted Mint's Recovery Mode and still couldn't get past a giant deluge of errors.
