I have a Compaq Pressario Desk top with
Windows 7
LMDE
Ubuntu 10
There fore on booting I get Grub2 giving me the choice between the 3 OSs.
I am changing my system to HP 3090 MT. I wil have the above OS configuration on the new PC. No issues with that.
However I wish to pass on my current PC to my grandchild. I would like to keep only Windows7 - uninstalling ( wiping out Linux OSs, reformatting those drives to NTFS or FTS)..... till she can get ready for Linux.
I do not know whether Grub2 will manifest even after Linux OSs are removed. I do not want to reinstall Win7 to achieve this viz over writing MBR ( to avoid downloading all upgrades).
Is there a way to uninstall Grub in all its forms so that on booting it has only Win7 to go to.
Will be grateful for advice

Re: Reverting to only Windows7 in my Desktop giving to grand
If your grandchild has no prior experience with computers, why not start hr off right with Mint or Ubuntu. People who work with children and adults with no computer experience often say that Linux is quicker and easier for novices to learn than Windows.
Also, she won't pick up all of those Windows methods that cause so much trouble for experienced Windows users when they try Linux.
If you still want to give her WIndows, the simplest and easiest way is to reinstall Windows 7 using the entire hard drive. If you don't reinstall, I am not certain how you would go about rebuilding the Windows bootloader after removing LMDE and Ubuntu. You can try something like the Ultimate Boot CD

or EasyBCD

to do the job.

If you're certain that you want Windows 7 only, the easiest way to do it would be:
1: Use a GParted live cd (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) to remove all Linux partitions from the hard drive, and to resize your Windows partition to fill the entire drive
2: Use a Windows 7 installation CD to replace the GRUB MBR with a Windows MBR (http://www.ehow.com/how_4836283_repair-mbr-windows.html)

Boot the computer using Windows 7 DVD, select "Repair" > "Command Prompt".
1. Recover the Master Boot Record
If you're unsure where the 'system' partition resides, substitute the drive letter (C:) with "ALL" or "SYS".
2. Mark Windows partition "Active"
Start the DISKPART utility. Below are the relevant commands needed to do this.
list disk
# Lists the number of physical disks.
select disk n
# Select the disk, n, to focus on.
list partition
# Lists the number of the partitions on disk n.
select partition n
# Select the partition, n, to mark as active.
active
# Mark the partition active.
3. Reboot
1. Recover the Master Boot Record
Code: Select all
bootsect /NT60 C: /FORCE /MBR
