Is Gnome PPP included on the Mint 10 CD?

Postby Gyrotwister on Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:00 am

For security reasons I really have to get a move on upgrade from Jaunty 9.04 but have been dragging my feet because I just dread the thought of having to get dialup working again. Jaunty is my third version of Ubuntu and it seems like the dialup part of it has been getting harder each time around.

It's been such a pain in the rear but I've just read that Linux Mint 10 "Julia" contains Gnome PPP in the Local Repository. I suppose this means it's on the disk but just not installed by default. I can handle that, but there is one thing I'm not clear on....

Is Gnome PPP and all the associated files/dependencies included on the CD or do I have to get my hands on the DVD version? So my question is a simple one, CD, or must it be the DVD for Gnome PPP?

Rob.

In the repository means that you can install it from Software Manager. Local means that you don't need internet. It is installed on both the CD and DVD or at least it should be.

So I've asked a friend to download the CD for me. Created a new partition and installed Linux Mint 10 32bit. All's well so far. But...
I've found Gnome PPP in Software Manager and it won't install. I click on the install button and it asks for my password. I type in my password and click authenticate. It doesn't install. I've tried this more than once.
So then I tried to install a game from Software Manager that didn't work either. Seems I'm having trouble with the Software Manager application. It should automatically look to the optical disk drive right?

Here I go replying to my own posts.
I've re-read the "Release Notes for Linux Mint 10" at
http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_julia.php
and it says GnomePPP will be avaliable in...
/usr/share/local-repository
So I went looking, and found it in...
/usr/share/local-repository/binary
Off by one directory.
Looks like everything I need is there.
libwvstreams4.6-base_4.6.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
libwvstreams4.6-extras_4.6.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
libuniconf4.6_4.6.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
wvdial_1.60.4_i386.deb
gnome-ppp_0.3.23-1ubuntu2_i386.deb
At least it's all in one place and I dont have to go chasing all over the Internet for it. I suppose that's an improvement. Thankyou Linux Mint for putting it all in one place.

I don't want to seem ungrateful but the question must be asked.
Why isn't gnome-ppp installing via Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager?
Because in Synaptic Package Manager the Software Sources line under the “Other”tab for this local repository has a mistake in it.
It reads...
file:///usr/share/local-repository binary/
I'm guessing it should read more like
file:///usr/share/local-repository/binary/
There is a forward slash missing which prevents Synaptic from finding the packages. We can't install the software if we can't find the packages can we?

This must be a known bug right?
Linux Mint 10 Julia was released in late November2010.
Surely I'm not the first to come across this?

Bump.
So am I right about this or did Gnome PPP fail to install for some other reason?

For those of you who are not sure what I'm talking about, please take a look at...
[Synaptic Package Manager] [Settings] [Repositories] [Other Software].
You will see the following line near the bottom...
file:///usr/share/local-repository binary/

Is this line right or wrong?
If it's wrong then how can it be corrected?

Have you tried going to Synaptic Package Manager and under Edit chosing Add CD-Rom... option to add CD-Rom and then hit refresh and try to install like that?

For the record I've installed Gnome PPP by running the .debs from the folder in which they reside. I did this several days ago. My dialup connection is working OK. The point is that I think I've found a bug and am trying to get an understanding of it before I file a report. Perhaps I'm wrong about the nature of this problem but I'm guessing the reference in Synaptic is incorrect.

Yes I have tried editing the existing line and also adding a new one. I've not tried referencing the CD drive because the .deb packages reside on the hard drive after Linux Mint has been installed. I've been trying to reference the folder file:///usr/share/local-repository/binary/ because that's where the .debs are.

I'm guessing Synaptic won't accept my input because I'm getting the syntax wrong.
What's the correct syntax for pointing Synaptic Package Manager at a specific folder on a hard drive?

Open the folder, right-click > Open in Terminal. Type this command and press Enter:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null | gzip -9c > Packages.gz

Then add it in sources.list:
deb file:/usr/share/local-repository/binary/ /

Thanks, but sorry, I don't understand what's going on with that command.

I was looking for a path (with the correct syntax) which could be typed directly into
[Synaptic Package Manager] [Settings] [Repositories] [Other Software] without having to open the terminal.
Thought it might allow me to provide more information when reporting this bug.
I'll report it as just "failed to install".

I wonder how many dial up users tried to install this distro and wound up quietly dropping the CD in the bin and moving on to something that works. Surely I'm not the last dialup Linux user on Earth?

Now, where exactly should I report this bug?

Hi:
Gnome ppp does not work with the newer linux distrubutions...Matter of fact if you try the new Ubuntu 11 or Mint linux 11 pppconfig for setting up dialup does not work.
and yes i know there are lots of us on dialup but few seem to care.
I found PCLinux was good for diaup...it works //
Good luck

No, this is not true. Gnome-PPP still works on Mint 10.

You should just be able to install it via Synaptic. For me, the local repository works by default. The missing / is not a bug.

And you simply cannot add a folder to Synaptic/APT. It first needs to have a package list. That package list is in the local-repository folder and not in the binary subfolder: that's why the / is missing, to make clear that the package list is in local-repository but the packages in the binary subfolder.
