Increase size of mint4win

Post by madoldfart »

Window 7 64bit
Linux Mint 10 Julia 64Bit
2TB Hard drive

After spending many hours getting all the Linux apps, Descktop effects, themes, samba links to my PVR etc, etc, i now keep getting error messages that i am low on disc space.
I now realize that when i installed Linux Mint 10 along side windows, Linux Mint 10 does not automatically expand as you add data and apps. I must of allocated the default size on installation, and hence did not expand the drive

Currently all my media(800gig) is stored in windows and i just point to the linux host folder to get these media files.

Issue: I obviously need to create more disc space for the mint4win installation, but i do not really want to spend more hours getting my linux setup functioning the way it does now.
Questions:
1) Should i increase the size of the mint4win installation and how do i do this? - assuming that my setup will not be lost. What is the maximum size?
2) Should i have linux mint 10 on its own partition, and how do i do this without loosing my setup?
3) As the majority of my 2TB hard drive will be media, then what size should i allocate to the linux partion or mint4win install.

I realize that option 2 is propably better because that later on i can resize it easier if required using gparted for example.

Theres a thread that can help you: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=53313

Ideally you should give Mint it's on partition.

Thankyou but LVPM currently does not work with installs generated by Wubi 10.04.
Im guessing that Linux mint 10 uses wubi 10.04

If i was to backup my files and software, then reintall Linux mint 10 either partioned or with mint4win using more disk space and then restore files and software, would i have the same functionality as i do currently

This post makes a good point: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 53#p132107

You could do that with another mint4win installation but I highly recommend installing Mint in it's own partition.

Thankyou, have read up alot on how to install a dual boot with linux in its own partition, still getting my head around it all, but i think my best option is to wait until LM11 is out and install it properly then.

Problem solved, but if you know of any good tutorials on how to set up a dual boot and linux in its own partion, it would be appreciated.

Ideally i would like my partition setup in such a way that any future upgrades of windows or linux will be simple

I have windows 7 64bit 6Gig Ram

info like
/boot size
/size
swap file size

By the way im loving linux mint and its simplicity.
Would ditch windows in a heartbeat if it wasnt for some of the latest games i play

I install Mint on one partition except if using btrfs as the file system. I always have more than one linux system and most of the time I have several so I don't want to many partitions.

300-500MB for boot is usually enough.
For / it depends on what you need, my main desktop has a 160GB and it's almost full and my netbook has 40GB and when I install Mint 11 it's going up to 50GB. When testing a linux distro I use 4-20GB.
It's usually recommended to setup a separate partition for home.
I always use a separate data partition.

For SWAP I use 1 to 2 times the amount of RAM but for your 6GB RAM computer that is to much. If you want to hibernate then you need more than 6GB of SWAP.

The Mint 11 installer should take care of you during the installation but there is some information about installing linux Mint:
