No backlight on boot

Weird problem(?) - when I boot Mint or OpenSUSE, I have no backlight during the splash screen. There's a faint image on the screen, but no backlight. It gets turned on right before login. This is on an HP G72 laptop.

I have an HP G62 laptop and I have exactly the same problem! no backlight in linux mint 10, opensuse 11, fedora 14 splash screens and no backlight in gparted at all. also no backlight in ubuntu 10.04 and mandriva 2010 setups

im using linux mint 10 gnome
