Would this work? Partition ?

I'm very new to Linux and have a question,(probably not practical) but..What would be wrong with a single root (/) partition for everything (no /boot, no /home, no /var, no /tmp, none of those separate mount points for system directories);
just a single root partition for everything plus a swap.
A friend who has FedoraC8 suggested this.
He says, after all Windows does it with a single partition.
Thoughts please.

Hi Mike,
That is the way that most people do it.

I personally place /home on a separate partition, and many people swear by putting /usr on yet another partition.

But for the vast majority of desktops, there is a / (root) and a swap. (I am not positive, but I think if you let Mint installer decide how to divvy up the drive it does so with 2 partitions.)

From reading all the posts about partitions, I thought it necessary to have all those partitions to make things work.
I see the desirability of having a separate /home partition, and I guess there may be some security concerns about putting everything
in /.
I think I'll try it that way on my next install.
