must startx manually

Hi everyone, first time poster- I will try to be clear. I have ATI Radeon 9250 and managed to get fglrx driver working and 3D rendering- was awesome. After installing mysql-server and mythtv, I couldn't establish a connection between mythtv and mysql. Someone (not here) suggested "chgrp users /tmp"and "chmod 0664 /tmp" for mythtv. After Ctrl+Alt+Bspc , X totally crashed, tried to restart several times on its own then gave up. I could only startx as root. Tried "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org", that didn't fix it.Then did "chgrp root /tmp" and "chmod 777 /tmp". Now I can startx as user again but if I log out, only text login. From this information, where can I look for clues?
The var/log/messages file doesn't show anything odd (from my limited knowledge)
