If you have 512MB of RAM and a shared RAM graphics card you need to install a swap partition and activate the partition before starting the installer.

You may want to try Mint 10 LXDE because it uses less RAM and it's faster.

Mint comes with Gparted, you can use Gparted to shrink a existing partition and then create a SWAP partition.
Here you have two tutorials about gparted:
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb54TsYI6UA
More complete tutorial: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gparted.html

There are a few things you should know:
- Mint 11 has a boot option that uses less RAM to install: "only-ubiquity".
- Linux Mint 10 LXDE requires about 64-128MB less RAM to install than Mint 11.

Can you login in "Gnome (No effects)" and "Gnome (Safe Mode)" and see if the same happens?

You have to open a terminal window and run the command "inxi -Gx" and post here the output. You can use the mouse to select, copy and paste.
