This may be caused by the gfx grub used in Daryna. I think we started using that in Celena but not in Cassandra
Does it have a recovery partition?
Dell and recovery partition is no good combination for us....
You could download the supergrub ISO (only a few MB) and burn a CD and then use it to repair grub

I think it may fix the problem. You replace gfxgrub with ordinary grub
Of course you won't get the nice splash, but it'll work - I hope

Had the same problem on all of my DEll dual-boot machines. Here's the fix that worked for me:

from the terminal

$ gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

then enter your password. Change the line (this is about line nine or ten) that commands
gfxmenu=/etc/grub/message.mint
remove the gf
This line should now read xmenu=/etc/grub/message.mint
Save the file.
After this change, Daryna or Celena grub will display a legible, text-only display just like Casandra.

Welcome to Mint beechtree
I don't think you have a good solution
xmenu is a Mac menu (but not for boot) so what you have done is simply to disable gfxmenu
The proper way could be to put ## first on the line (or remove the line or...)

Graphics may well be the problem, it's just that when I read the first post that was not the first thing on my mind
