False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
Hi,
I have a laptop ( an HP Envy 17 2050eo ), with dual-boot ( Mint 11 Katya, and Win 7)
I have a strange problem: Whenever I start my machine after using Linux, The BIOS reports that the computer was shutdown due to over-heating. I am using the 'shutdown' -command from the menu... This happens whether the computer has been running for 1 minute or 8 hours...
The funny thing is that if I have been using Windows 7, and shutdown from there, I do not get this message...
This is not a critical problem, as the workaround is simple (just press Enter when the BIOS message comes up), but it is a little annoying...
Any ideas what causes this? Or, how to fix it?

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
Have a look in the BIOS thermal readouts, is your laptop in fact overheating? This might be the case. There is a power regression issue on Linux Mint 11 which specifically affects laptops with poor thermal design, where it is not as conservative with power as Linux Mint 10.
Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
$ sudo acpi -ti
Thermal 0: ok, 61.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 0 switches to mode hot at temperature 105.0 degrees C
Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 98.0 degrees C
So, yes, it is a bit warm... this being after running for about 5 hours.
Still, I find it hard to believe that, when I just turn the computer on (after it has been off for a long time), let it boot, and then immediately restart, that it would have had time to actually overheat...
Also, I have never seen it actually power down due to overheating...

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
Ah, you didn't mention this earlier. Then it isn't caused by overheating, which is good. But then I'm stumped on thisenforce73 wrote:Still, I find it hard to believe that, when I just turn the computer on (after it has been off for a long time), let it boot, and then immediately restart, that it would have had time to actually overheat...
Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
Perhaps updating the BIOS fixes this issue?

A CPU chip can get to critical temps in less than a minute without a fan, or improper/blocked ventilation!
ps : critical = damage !

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
Hi,
Thanks for the tips... I checked the BIOS, and it was indeed a bit on the old side... ...so I updated it to the latest version ( I did this from the Windows side, as the HP software 'only works in Windows...')
Sadly, this did not help with my problem... but at least I got to verify once again, that this is somehow a Linux issue...
Here's how I did it: downloaded the BIOS patch ( in Linux), moved it over to the Win7 partition, rebooted into Win7 ( with BIOS thermal warnings), installed BIOS patch, rebooted into Win7, ( no warnings), rebooted into Linux ( BIOS warnings again!)
Frankly, I don't know what else to try...
The only theory I can come up with, is that somehow the Linux Mint shutdown sequence signals the BIOS with a code that the BIOS interprets as a thermal shutdown... the warning screen mentions a code ( 090D ), though I don't know whether this is an internal HP code or not...
Lastly, I can confirm that the fan is working properly, and there is plenty of air-flow around the fan area

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
090D seems to be a common 'overheating' code at HP.
Let's try to trace down this issue. Please add acpi=off to the boot arguments using the E key from the boot menu, and then boot Mint. Then reboot your computer and see if the warning appears again.

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
If AlbertP's suggestion doesn't help, I'd like to make a suggestion :
1) Mark lm-sensors for Re-Installation through the Package Manager, Apply, then Reboot.
2) run the following from the terminal, follow the prompts with y (yes) to detect all possible chips, y to write changes,
and then be sure to reboot again.
anything change ?

Hi,
I tried this, but no changes; same warning still...

What type of CPU do you have?

Re: False 'Thermal Shutdown' BIOS warning
I have an HP Pavillion i5 2410 and this also occurs.
Perhaps windows, on shutdown, is sending some signal to bios .. and linux does not
Im sure my comuter is not overheat, 62 degrees C.
