0. My fiance saw me sneakernetting too often
& took my dvd to boot another machine.
(this laptops's HD is toasty, so.... Live DVD it is)
What gets my goat is that often you can leave the machine alone & no problem,
even let it goto sleep, as long as you get the DVD back in before waking the box back up.
1. Well, she didn't get the DVD back in, in time.
When that happens the box goes bonkers,
will show stobing flashes of the splash screen as you move the mouse or keyboard,
but nothing else.
This is a Leveno Thinkpad T61 (type 6458).
2. & this time I *need* a text document I'd been taking phone notes on.
4. Does anyone know of a workaround to this?

I must be getting old, I've no idea what it is you are asking!

To clarify:
If & when it locks up,
upon the issue of the (live) DVD being temporarily out of the pc,
is there a way to force Mint to recover,
that anyone's experienced?

Ah I see. Unfortunately probably not, when you are running from a live DVD, the system is partly in memory but mainly on the disc. If you remove it from the drive the OS won't be able to access system files when required and will likely crash. All files are transient unless you save them somewhere, I doubt if you could recover any data.TeslaCoiled wrote:the issue of the (live) DVD being temporarily out of the pc

With all the inherent thread stability in unix,
you'd almost bet there was a way to prevent this sort of crash.
Or recover from it.
Sounds like this an issue to be seriously considered.
Especially when you're out & about
& lots of guys say- hey, will that work on my rig?
It'd be even nicer to use MY laptop while the DVD(s) is/are making rounds- I always try to keep 2 extras to give away.

I'm sorry but no system can be guaranteed if it's system drive is removed. Would you expect Windows to carry on working if you took out the hard drive? If you want to pass the disc around, why not just install it to the laptop then you wouldn't need the disc?

I need to get around to buying a replacement hd;
I admit to being spoiled by the live dvd.
