I asked the same question in this post:

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=86477

Should be:

user: mint
password: <enter>

So in otherwords, there is no actual password for the live user other than simply one tap of the enter key?

The user: mint, and password (press enter key) are not working for me with the live cd and I can't get past the login screen to install.

Any help to overcome this obstacle sure would be appreciated. Thanks.

Usually there is no user or password needed.
When the log in screen comes up just wait for the 10 second countdown and it should log in automatically.
I "think" it is 10 seconds but what ever it is, just do nothing
and it should start the desktop without any input from the user.

Edit:
I am confused ? When I boot Mint 12 Lisa "Live" in Virtual Box
there is no log on screen. It just boots straight to the desktop...
The only time it ever asked for a password was After I installed it.
And of course , I had entered my own User name and password at the end of the install.
Have not tried to boot computer from the CD yet. But I would guess it would be the same deal.

Thank you all for the help and advice.

However; so far, nothing anyone has suggested has worked. I did reburn Mint 12, but no help: the compatibility mode doesn't boot on this burn (nor on the last one) and the default selection asks for a login and password that I don't what they are.

Is there some argument I edit before selecting from the live cd options that will let me boot, by-passing a password?

Same here; I have Lisa installed to VirtualBox and went just like it did for you. The only time Lisa asks for a password is following installation. That's what made my question here so frustrating. The two live CDs wanted a password FIRST, before installation.

I only have one 2 and a half year old cd-rw. I tried to burn an iso of Lisa 5 times before getting one that booted. The sixth one booted but wanted a password. I ended up trying another burn after reading via Google about someone who had had the same problem with Linux Mint 10. He was told to burn a "legitimate" copy, not a RC. But this time, Mint 12 had been released so I tried a seventh burn that also booted but also wanted that elusive password. The eighth, ninth, and 10th burns didn't boot.

I suppose I'll just have to hold off for another week until I have the money to buy some DVDs.

You should only need the live user and pwd if you logout and log back in otherwise you have a bad iso file or something is wrong with your CD recorder or CD-R medium. Can you try a live USB?

Well, there wasn't anything else to do but wait until my retirement check came so I could buy some dvds. Or . . . keep on trying just in case. Lo and behold, 13 must be a charm because it was the 13th burn that booted and didn't require me to give up a password.

As I always do, I deleted the latest Ubuntu and put the latest Mint on that partition (sdb6). Once I'm fully satisfied that install of Lisa is good, I'll delete Katya (sda5) and install Pinguy 11.10 in her place.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. The Mint community is appreciated.

If you boot up from a live Mint dvd or cd and you are asked for a password, then I would first check to see if my dvd/cd is corrupt. If not, then maybe try some of the boot options, because you should not be asked for a password if you are booting from the live CD. It's either a bad burn of the ISO or some incompatibility with your hardware. I'd lay odds on the bad burn though.

I'm running Mint 12 off of a USB stick and it all works great. I wanted to try cinnamon and so installed and then logged out. Now I can't seem to log back in again.
The live user is mint and theoretically there should be no password - just the enter key. However it gives me an Invalid password message.
So does anyone know the password? I've tried all the usuall.....root.....toor.....live......mint.
Zilch.
What could it be?
