Thunderbird profile doesn't work. solved

Postby ml2 on Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:07 pm

I cannot get my Thunderbird repository to work again after backing up - neither in Windows nor in LinuxMint 2.1
I had both Thunderbird and Firefox profiles shared with Windows and now when I reinstalled both systems - having backed up the profiles elsewhere - only Firefox profile started to work again, and Thunderbird's just won't - it starts the new account wizard and doesn't seem to know anything about the accounts that were set up. In the profile's "Mail" directory" I can see, that the different folders with the names of the accounts are there. This happens both in Windows and LinuxMint 2.1. How could that have happened?
I used LinuxMint 4 before and am now back to 2.1 (I kind of remember that I was able to get webcam to work in the earlier install and had less problems playing avi-files - in LinuxMint 4 this was a complete disaster for me. But that's another subject).
Is it possible that it has something to do with different versions of Thunderbird being used then and now? I think I have hade icedove at some point - but now, in Mint 2.1, I cannot find it in the repositories, and I don't know whether a repository line for it could be added. In Windows, I am not sure whether the version I used before the reinstall was different from the one I installed now.

I use a program called 'Mozbackup' in windows Vista to do regular backups of Firefox and Thunderbird .. you could try running this and it might recover or repair your profile .. worth trying anyway !

I tried. This programme wants a .pcv file to recover from, but I don't have that, probably because I haven't used this before.

How about the info on this page ... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder ...

Failing that I would say the best place to ask is the support forums ... http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php ...

Good luck !

I got it working. May-be I just wasn't doing the right thing before, I'm not sure.

I thought that if I have written the correct location of the thunderbird profile I want to use to the profiles.ini file, the application should start using that. Isn't it so?

Anyway, I just set the accounts in Linux's Thunderbird and pointed them to the right Mail folders and then it started working. In Windows I didn't have to do anything after that - it just worked. May-be this was how it was supposed to be. Before trying that, I thought that settings and everything are saved in the profile and that all I have to do is to write the location of the profile into profiles.ini.

Thanks for all your help.

Just a point - nowhere in this post are repositories what you use.
Repositories are the software depots that you install from

OK, I'll show my repositories list. I've been adding repos to find one that would include aMSN 0.97 or icedove, but I haven't been successful. I'm generally quite happy with Mint 2.1, so I won't bother installing a new system for a while, I think. For example, in Mint 4 I had a very hard time getting the video players to show the colours correctly.
