<SOLVED> - Mint 12 (Lisa) live DVD won't boot

Postby TrawlerJoe on Fri Dec 02, 2011 12:09 am

Hello all,
Looking for some help. My machine won't boot from the Mint 12 64-bit live DVD. Or more accurately, I get the boot menu, and it might be booting, but with a black screen. With other options, I can boot to terminal prompt.

Info:
- The DVD is good: MD5 is correct, and I can boot it on other machines.
- The problem machine boots fine with the Mint 11 (Katya) DVD.
- The problem machine is an HP Omni 220 Quad (all-in-one), with an ATI AMD Radeon 6450 video card, wireless keyboard/mouse, Broadcom BCM 43225 network controller, 64-bit, i7, 8MB RAM, 1TB disk.

I've tried a bunch of various settings with the boot menu over the last couple evenings. For example, I've tried:

Boot Option 1 - Start Linux Mint:
- with no changes --> black screen
- with "nomodeset" --> boots to terminal prompt
- with "nomodeset noacpi nolacpi" --> boots to terminal prompt

Boot Option 2 - Start Linux Mint (compatibility mode):
- with no changes --> boots to terminal prompts
- with "nomodeset and acpi_osi=" --> mousepointer in center of black screen
- with "nomodeset", and deleting the noacpi/nolacpi settings --> mousepointer in center of black screen

Any suggestions? I could just install Katya, since that seems to work. But I'd like to start getting used to gnome3/MSGE, since it appears that I'll have to get used to it eventually.

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I know this might sound biased or bad but it's not meant to be either, get an nVidia based video card, for real, Linux of any stripe LOVES nVidia chips. I remember even in my Windoze days, I had problems and crappy performance from ATI cards. YEARS AGO I had twinview (same desktop spread over 2 monitors) working in a diff Linux, using nVidia's proprietary driver (wasn't available in any repository yet), wasn't easy to install or configure back then either but I did it, much easier now, click and go pretty much. That seems to be your problem, if you are getting a mouse cursor but no picture...yep. You said another Mint version worked? For some reason the X.org driver liked your card. A similar thing happened with my Raid 0 set up, LM 10 (which I am still using, love it) installed no prob to it but LM 11 wouldn't, go figure. And oh, I believe there is a section about this in the known problems of the release notes, check it out.
Core 2 Quad Q9550(2.83GHz), 4 drive Raid 0 (320GBx4/1.28TB), 500GB storage drive, 8GB Kingston Hyper X, 23" LG LED, etc, running ONLY 64-bit Linux Mint. I don't like Microsoft AND Apple because of overpricing and their 'big brother' attitudes.

Oh... boy... I'm an idiot. I labeled my disks wrong, and I was trying to use the 32-bit live DVD on my 64-bit system. The 64-bit disk worked just fine, so I'm now installed and running. I installed the 11.11 ATI Catalyst driver, and all is well.

I'll keep the nvidia/ATI info in mind for next purchase, but it looks like I'm good for now. Thanks.

No prob, hey, I've done similar things, lol, but yeah, if the machine is set for 64-bit...could be a prob.
