I just received my brand spankin new DV 9700, here are the specs for my specific machine:

- AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60 (2.0 GHz, 512KB+512KB L2 Cache )
- 17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
- FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!!
- 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
- FREE Upgrade to HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone!!
- FREE Upgrade to 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth!!
- 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
- FREE Upgrade to LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support!

Okay, I pop in a Mint/ubuntu/kubuntu live cd and try to boot to it, but instead of getting the desktop I get a X server error telling me:

Fatal Server error:
no screens found

Any thoughts? I have tried several versions of Mint and Ubuntu, nothing has given me an X environment.

You did not mention the graphics card
Also the resolution is rather odd - very wide
However
Fatal Server error:
no screens found
is no common error and it brings me to the question does it work at all?

There is no difference between the lite and the standard edition except for some codecs and the like (as far as I know)
Anyway for the wifi this may help

To find out exactly which Broadcom run
Code: Select all
lspci

in a terminal

cullen, did the ubuntuforums threads help?

I have a dv6301 (unfortunately, motherboard died and its in for repairs atm) and successfully installed both ubuntu 7.10 and mint on it ( can't remember which mint - probably celena). In both cases the live cd worked fine, but when I tried to install I got the same errors as you're getting.

I found the solution in that long HP laptops thread on ubuntuforums, used the boot parameters noapic nolapic irqpoll noirqdebug and everything was okay.
I used the restricted wireless driver and the broadcom worked just fine.
