Do you use the built in graphics?
Not that I think it's that but it is a possible culprit

This could be that gfxgrub is not working
I think what you could start with is to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
comment out the line
menu=/etc/grub/message.mint
add ## at the beginning.
If that did not help you could read this post

to get some understanding

Can I edit the file before Linux has started??
Well not from the not starting Mint :)
But you can do it if you boot the live CD.
If disks don't get mounted star gparted and they will be...

sda is the current for pata and sata
hda is outdated, but I thought it would work....

wonder why LinuxMint installs GRUB with /dev/hda1 when there's no such disk...
Think it's a glitch somehow - I have not seen much of this, just a few instances
