No GRUB Menu "Frequency Out of Range" on screen <SOLVED>

Postby DocTree on Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:33 pm

No problem with older versions of Mint but after upgrade to 12 (Lisa), I get no menu. "Frequency out of range" bounces around my screen for a minute, then Mint loads. I occasionally need to use Win7 until _everything_ runs in VirtualBox. Thought I found a solution at viewtopic.php?f=90&t=74283&start=0 but found too many differences between 11 (Katya) and 12 (Lisa).

Can someone tell me where to find/set screen resolution with Grub2 and Mint 12? I spent several hours searching and still have no clue. Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi DocTree,
Welcome to the forum :)

The old "StartUp-Manager" that you know from earlier versions of Mint has been dropped from LM12.

From Mint 12 "Tips and Tricks Guide" - section 3c
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=86813
recommends installing Grub Customizer instead.

Could this post on Ubuntu forums be a possible solution for you?

post #849 reports a similar problem with the "out of range" message.
They edited /etc/default/grub - the line
Code: Select all
 #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

Thank You, Carabriz!

The ubuntuforum thread was no help; older version (but _WAS_ same problem). Grub Customizer from the Mint 12 "Tips and Tricks Guide" was the answer. Using the latest Grub Customizer, I just changed the menu screen resolution to 800x600 and all is working as intended. I suspect I'm going to like Grub Customizer when I start testing alpha and beta releases again.
