problems after installing kde over gnome in linux mint12

After a fresh install of Linux Mint 12 Gnome, 64 bit from windows7 (wubi), i installed kde over it by sudo apt command. Now my KUBUNTU desktop seems to be ok but the gnome desktop has a top panel showing options like “ file , edit,view, go, bookmarks, help” and the panels are not editable/ unresponsive to mouse actions. The “file” option in that bar is just behind the “infinity sign”.This is all with the administrator user created as part of the install.
How do I get the (far superior) Linux Mint 12 Desktop, as shown in the Linux Mint web site screen shots?
