(SOLVED) Can't Boot WinXP After Installing Mint 11 64-Bit

Post by RoyM »

My system is a custom built computer consisting of an Asus M4A785-M motherboard, AMD Athelon 630 X4 CPU with 4 MB RAM, Seagate 500 GB SATA HD, Seagate 1 TB SATA HD, and a Seagate 250 GB IDE HD. Until two days ago I was running a triple boot system with Ubuntu 10.04, Windows XP, and Mint 11 32-bit all on the first hard drive (500GB). Everything was working fine. I decided to replace Mint 11 (32-bit) with the 64-bit version. That's when the problems began. After installing Mint 11 64-bit, I could no longer boot to Windows XP or Mint 11 although they were still showing on the Grub boot menu. Whenever I chose Mint from the boot menu I would get the following error message: no such disk, no such partition, you need to load the kernel first. After three Mint 64-bit installations and getting the same error message, I looked very closely at the boot menu and realized that it had not been updated. The partition shown for Mint 11 was not the partition that it was actually on but the one that the 32-bit Mint 11 had been on. After the third install, a strange thing happened. I still could not boot XP but if I chose it on the boot menu, then a different boot menu came up with the Mint 11 64-but entries at the top followed by Ubuntu 10.04 and then Windows XP. If I choose Mint from this menu, it boots to the desktop with no problem and appears to work OK. Ubuntu 10.04 still works fine as well. Windows XP, however, still does not boot. During the installation when asked for the location of Mint's boot-loader, I chose the MBR option. I'm wondering now if I should have done that. I'm wondering if Windows boot-loader was overwritten and perhaps that's the reason that it won't boot. But what about Ubuntu? I"m wondering if I can repair the MBR with the Windows Repair Console, but if I do that won't that just overwrite the other boot-loaders and then Windows will boot and the two Linux systems won't? One other strange thing that I've observed is that from time to time over the past two days the designation of the first hard drive has changed from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb. Isn't that rather strange? I've never seen anything quite like that before. Currently it's /sdb. I'm really over my head on this one and any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi Spandey,

Thanks for responding to my post. I ran the boot_info_script and the Results.txt file is shown below.

Re: Can't Boot WinXP After Installing Mint 11 64-Bit

Did you notice that GRUB2 is installed in boot sector of sda2 and sdc1, both of them are NTFS and Windows? That's strange? :?: :?:

Since Windows boot sector need to be fixed, hope you have your XP install disk to fix that. Please go thru option #6 from here http://www.techrepublic.com/article/10- ... ot/6031733.

Yes, I noticed the Windows instance on sdc1. Have never been able to figure that out. It's not bootable. The only bootable one is the one on sda2. I'd like to get rid of the one on sdc1 but I'm not quite sure how to do it since I don't know how it got there in the first place. Yes, I still have my original Windows CD, so I'll check out the link you mentioned this weekend. Hopefully I can get the MBR fixed and get Windows working again. I'll let you know what happens sometime Sunday most likely. Thanks again for responding.

There are 2 things here MBR is at Disk level but Bootrecord of XP is at partition level. That bootrecord is important to be fixed first. Fix the boot record and try if it doesn't work fix the MBR as well.

(SOLVED)Re: Can't Boot WinXP After Installing Mint 11 64-Bit

Post by RoyM »

Hi Spandey,

I am happy to say that Windows XP is up and running again! I booted from the Windows XP CD, brought up the Repair Console and the boot record was repaired in a couple of minutes. As you suspected, repairing the boot record took care of any problems there may have been in the MBR. Didn't have to do anything with that. Now all three operating systems (Ubnuntu 10.04, Windows XP, Mint 11 64-bit) are working just fine. Thanks for responding to my post and directing me to the information on http://www.techrepublic.com. It's people like you that make forums like this such a valuable and helpful resource.

Hi Roy,
It's nice to know that it worked. Now can you please update the subject line of the First post to mark it closed. :)
