Installing Linux Mint 10 from USB..

Hello everyone.

I'm a newbie to Linux. Some two weeks ago, I had installed Fedora 10 in my machine. Well, I couldn't get to its GUI. I could only access to its Terminal. Yesterday I thought to install Linux Mint 10. I had USB Boot Installer of it. While the Fedora was on the system, I booted the USB and the GUI Desktop showed up well. Before installing Linux Mint, I thought I would remove the existing Linux Partition and did it. But after I removed the Fedora Linux partition, the GUI Desktop didn't show up. The USB Boot Installer was created by UNetBootin. After I selected "START LINUX MINT" it just shows the BLACK SCREEN (Previously would load GUI Desktop). It doesn't take me to terminal too.

I was pretty amazed why this happened. Did google, but didn't get the answer.
I thought you guys could help me out and joined the forum.

My machine is DELL INSPIRON N5110 with video card of INTEL HD GRAPHICS FAMILY.
I am DUAL-BOOTING Linux along with the Windows 7 64-bit.

You have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Fedora. And you removed the Linux partition of Fedora. I do not know if a specific boot partition was created when you installed Fedora, but if Fedora used only the root Linux partition and you removed it, then GRUB would be not able to boot your system.

Are you able to boot into Windows 7 now?. Are you sure that you removed the Linux partition of Fedora?.

While installing Fedora, I had chosen to use FREE SPACE as the LINUX partition.

And yes, you are correct. I had not been able to boot to windows 7 after the partition was removed. Just the black screen with GRUB prompt would appear. For that I took a windows 7 installation DVD and fixed the Master Boot Record. And then I had been able to boot to Windows 7.

What I am amazed about is why isn't the LINUX MINT GUI DESKTOP is not showing up after I removed the LINUX FEDORA. While it was on the machine, it had shown up well.

Try to prepare a new Linux Mint Live USB with UNetBootin and check if the GUI problem is over.

If you do not wish to create new partitions for Mint or modify the MBR, you can consider to install Linux Mint using mint4win. With this option (named Wubi in Ubuntu) Mint partitions will be stored in files of Windows. The loader will be the same of Windows too.

Well I found mint4twin works only in the version 12. I have v 10. I had v12 too but when I created booted the MINT USB created with UNETbootin, it said "BAD OR CORRUPT KERNEL IMAGE." And I'm not intending to download another one. (Have slow connection, takes atleast a day or two.)

I think that mint4win.exe is included in the Linux Mint 10 Live CD.

Well, I have the ISO file of Mint 10 and the only the thing I could find is 55 bytes file fo mint4twin (without the extension .exe).

But anyway, I don't want to to install Mint inside Windows. I want Linux Mint boot loader rather than Windows' one.
