unable to boot from LiveDVD (black screen)

Postby locke on Sun Apr 08, 2012 9:54 am

Hi All,

i'm new both here on this forum and to Linux mint as a distro, but i have been using Linux (Centos, Ubuntu, Gentoo) for quite some time now both as hobby and professional.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop at the moment but i want to switch to Linux Mint as i've been playing with it from within a VM and i really like what i see.

So i've downloaded the 32bit DVD image of the current version (12) and burned it to a DVD, but when i boot my desktop from that DVD i get to see a quick grub message and then the screen goes black and nothing happens. Everything dies (also no more keyboard response). To ensure the DVD is not broken a downloaded another image on a different computer and burned a new DVD with that image. Same result.

I've searched around with google and see a lot of people reporting similar but not exactly the same issues. I've tried their solutions but i haven't got it working.

I'm hoping you guys (and gals) can help me out here.

My hardware:

Dell Optiplex 390 SFF
Core i3 2100 CPU
4GB Ram
250GB SATA
Intel on-board video (disabled in bios)
AMD Ati Radeon 512MB 6350 Dual screen (2x DVI)
Intel G41 chipset

Thanks for any help you can offer
have you tried turning it off and on again?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I've been playing around some more and i might have found something. The system has a sata DVD drive, when i boot a ubuntu live cd from release 10.04 i get the message from isolinux that it cannot find a mountable media. When i boot from the 11.04 cd i don't get that message. Does Mint use the isolinux version that was also used in ubuntu 10.04?

Also for arguments sake i've tried installing from a USB stick, but the results are the same.

Quite annoying, never had this much trouble installing a linux distro..
