Running live session from ram [SOLVED]

Postby dagon on Tue Apr 17, 2012 7:01 pm

I came upon this idea on the community site and it looks like it's already implemented. There is the "toram" boot option, that apparently is implemented in Ubuntu already but I've never ever tried it and it doesn't look like it's one of the options that you here of first.
I found this information on boot options at help.ubuntu but no mention of toram:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Anyone tried it?
Anyone seen a tutorial for it?

Edit: Subject changed from( Boot "toram" )

EDIT: No, this doesn't work at all... A simple check with the System Monitor reveals that the ram is loaded the same amount with or without the "-- toram" argument. Back to the drawing board!! :P

I'm not the regular "Boot guy", but this is what I've found out so far.

Mint 12, Lisa:
If you press <tab> at boot you can add "-- toram", and press <return>.
This will cause the OS to be loaded to ram and subsequently be run from there. This will make your live session to be faster as there is a performance loss from reading the cd but also I think most USB-drives are slower than running from ram. You can also eject your boot media so you have access to the cd unit and USB port.

I don't know what previous Mints you can try this on but maybe from ~Mint 9 onward?
