In synaptic: mint menu>package manager>reload, Search for r
r-base-core
R is a system for statistical computation and graphics. It consists of a language plus a run-time environment with graphics, a debugger, access to certain system functions, and the ability to run programs stored in script files.

Dictated by the organization, one presumes, since it would seem that a spreadsheet would be better for calculations, or maybe a gui-based statistical system, like S, or even a symbolic mathematics program

Ok now its clear R has no gui. Will be tricky to work with it. I started the application via the terminal just typed in R.
Thank you for your help and the tip with the calculator but i need things like this http://www.quantmod.com/, hope it will work in Mint.
